Introduction to the Critical Investigation: Issues and Debates
1) Write a one-sentence answer to the initial questions in the factsheet:
- Do fashion magazines contribute to the occurrence of eating disorders?
They do as they only represent female that are tall and thin. This can lead to eating disorders as they see that as an "ideal" body shape. Magazines likes Vogue mostly show females in this body shape and their demographic are mostly teenager girls which could lead to them trying to look like them without knowing the consequences. They also promote being thin by having thing such as "10 ways to lose weight before summer" which could contribute to this issue as well.
- Do games make people behave violently?
Everyone reacts to games in a different way. People have propensity to violence but most people do not get effect by the games. However, you could argue that video games such as Call of Duty and GTA 5 promote violence and make it a norm. As well as this, video games are slowly become more realistic with graphic that look similar to real life. The way we play games has changed too as technology has improved, we see console such as Oculus, that make VR(virtual reality), making that you can be inside of. This would make it even more realistic which could lead to the younger demographic not recognizing the differences between reality and fiction.
- Does advertising work?
It does work as people see advertisements as a way of getting information. As well as this, company spend billion to advertise their products which must mean they do work. Advertising as become a way of life as we see it everywhere which leads to companies spending even more money trying to get their products recognized.
- Does social media generate misogyny?
Misogyny is reinforced in this generation however, more people are questioning and challenging it. Women before have had to deal with this before social because of the lack of authority they had. As social media allows people to hide behind a screen, they are more likely to do it as they don't see the consequence.
2) Having read the two sides to the discussion, what is your opinion on the effects debate?
I do believe that violence does directly effect the younger audience as they could forget the line of reality of fiction(hypodermic needle theory). However, most people that play these game are older and they understand this is a game and nothing less.
3) Summarise the two sides of the example issues and debates on page 2 of the factsheet:
